Software Updates for your tolino eReader

We are continuously working on improving our tolino ereader software. To ensure that you always enjoy the best possible reading experience with your tolino, you should always keep the software of your tolino product up to date. Please use our automated software updates for this purpose. Simply connect your tolino to the Internet via WLAN and follow the instructions on the screen. To avoid errors you should only install software updates manually via your computer if absolutely necessary.

The table below shows you which software update is currently valid for your eReader model. Before downloading, please check your model designation to see which download link will allow you to download the appropriate software update for your model. Please note: other eReader models would be damaged by using the wrong software version!

To avoid errors, you should only install updates manually on your computer in exceptional cases. If you do want to install a software update on your tolino eReader without a Wi-Fi connection, follow these steps (for all devices except the tolino shine 1—see the instructions below*):

1. Click the download button and save the file named update.zip to your desktop. Please note that your tolino eReader will only recognize the file as an update file if it has this exact filename.
2. Connect your tolino eReader to your computer using the included USB cable, and open the folder view in File Explorer TOLINO folder on the eReader.
3. Now copy the file update.zip from your desktop or other location directly into the root directory of your tolino eReader. Then disconnect the USB connection by ejecting the tolino eReader from your PC.
4. Please wait about 10 seconds for the software update to complete on the eReader, and then restart the device by pressing the power button for about 2 seconds. As soon as the context menu appears, please confirm by selecting Restart. The software update will now be installed automatically.

*Exception: manual software update for the tolino shine color, tolino shine (5th generation), and tolino vision color

1. Please make a note of the current software version so that you can check later to see if the manual update was successful.
2. Make sure your tolino eReader is charged to at least 20 %.
3. Connect your tolino eReader to your computer using the included USB-C cable, and then tap “Connect” in the “Computer Detected” dialog box on your tolino eReader.
4. Click the download button for the software compatible with your tolino eReader and save the downloaded file to your computer.
5. In File Explorer, open the directory view for the tolino eReader. Your tolino eReader will appear as the “eReader” drive.
6. Now copy or move the downloaded update file (“KoboRoot.tgz” or “update.tar”) to the “.kobo” folder. To view the “.kobo” directory on your PC, you must have the “Show hidden folders” option enabled on your PC.
7. After the update file (“KoboRoot.tgz” or “update.tar”) has been successfully copied to the “.kobo” folder, disconnect the USB connection by ejecting the tolino eReader from your PC.
8. A few seconds after ejecting the card, your tolino eReader should automatically restart and install the software update.

*Exception: Manual software update for the tolino shine 1

1. Click the download button and save the file named update.zip on your desktop. Please note that your tolino eReader will only recognize the file as an update file if it has this exact filename.
2. Connect your tolino eReader to your computer using the included USB cable, and open the folder view in File Explorer TOLINO folder on the eReader.
3. Now copy the file update.zip from your desktop or other location to the extsd folder on your tolino eReader. Then disconnect the USB connection by ejecting the tolino eReader from your PC.
4. Please wait about 10 seconds for the software update to complete on the eReader, and then restart the device by pressing the power button for about 2 seconds. As soon as the context menu appears, please confirm by selecting Restart. The software update will now be installed automatically.
